    DIRECTOR

    Achille Dello Russo, 55 years, married, was born in Avellino. He is a Senior Police Officer and joined the Italian National Police in 1975.

    On April 10th 1975, he was assigned to the Police Headquarters of Imperia (Questura), and from 1978 to 1981 he headed the local Flying Squad.
    In 1981 he was seconded to the Flying Squad at the Police Headquarters of Rome (Questura), and directed the Anti-Robbery Section until March 1985; later, he was appointed Deputy Head of the Criminalpol "Lazio-Umbria" Inter-provincial Centre at the Police Headquarters of Rome (Questura). He held this position up to 1990 springtime.
    On February 15th, 1990, he raised to the rank of Primo Dirigente of the Italian National Police for the acknowledgement of his extraordinary merit as investigator. In July 1990, he was assigned to the Criminalpol Headquarters and tasked with the direction of the Interpol Service III Division.
    On July 1991 he was entrusted with the task to set up the Witness Protection Service.
    On February 1992, he was assigned to the Direzione Investigativa Antimafia as Head of Division within the III Branch that deals with International Relations for Investigative Purposes.
    In 1997 he was appointed Acting Local Chief of the Police for Police Headquarters of Rome (Questura), and on March 3rd,1998, he was promoted Dirigente Superiore and directed the Police Headquarters of Rimini (Questura).On June 2000, he was designated Chief of the Police for Police Headquarters of Catania (Questura).
    On April 2001 he was promoted Senior Police Officer of the Italian National Police.
    Since June 18th, 2002, he has been the DIA Director


    HEADQUARTERS

    In order to accomplish his functions, the DIA Director avails himself of two deputies, one supervising the operations and the other one the administration of the agency which consists of a central body and several territorial units. The structure of the DIA, outlined by the legislator, consists, at a central level, of a Cabinet Division and seven offices (Inspection Office, Personnel Office, Information System, Training Office, Technical Support Office, Administration and Accounting Office) subdivided into:

    • 1st BRANCH- PREVENTIVE INVESTIGATIONS

      This is a central intelligence unit, that collects and analyzes information concerning organized crime in order to develop useful leads in countering Italian criminal organizations in Italy and abroad as well as foreign organized crime groups operating in Italy.

    • 2st BRANCH -CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS BRANCH.

      Plans investigative activities and coordinates police operations.

    • 3st BRANCH- INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATION RELATIONS BRANCH

      Is responsible for the relations with foreign counterparts, as well as for bilateral and multilateral agreements designed to successfully fight organized crime at an international level.

    PERIPHERAL STRUCTURE


    The peripheral structure of the DIA includes 12 field offices and 7 resident offices; the field offices and resident offices have no predetermined territorial jurisdiction, even though they are located in certain areas. They have been set up to ensure enhanced operational mobility and flexibility.
